California is home to many Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) programs designed to assist persons with autism and other developmental disorders. According to a report (US employment demands for behavior analysts) written by Light Cast, it was discovered that the demand for behavior analysts is increasing. It was reported that the annual nationwide demand for people holding BCBA or BCBA-D certification has increased yearly since 2010, with a 14% increase from 2022 to 2023. Demand was highest in 5 states in 2023 (ordered from most to least): California, Massachusetts, Texas, Florida, and Georgia. These five states account for 40% of the recent demand for behavior analysts, with California alone accounting for 18% of the 2023 demand.

California ABA Master’s Program

There are about 10 universities and colleges that offer Master’s programs in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The master’s programs in ABA are designed to help students prepare for the Board Certification Behavior Analyst (BCBA) exam and offer coursework and practicum that help fulfill certification requirements.

How to Become a BCBA in California

There are necessary steps to follow to become a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst (BCBA) in California. These steps include;

  1. You must have a master’s degree in behavior analysis, psychology, education, or any other related field. This degree must be acquired from an accredited university offering approved coursework by the Behavioral Analyst Certification Board (BACB).
  2. You must also finish about 1500-2000 hours of supervised fieldwork. 
  3. The next step is to ace your BCBA examination. This is a computer-based test to evaluate your knowledge of behavioral analysis practices, discipline, and principles
  4. Just like every other course, you must maintain your certification by getting involved in continuing education and adhering to the BACB’s ethical requirements to maintain your certification.
